Hurricane-force winds of up to 170 km per hour and heavy rains hit parts of Britain today, disrupting rail links and blocking drivers due to flooded roads, the Associated Press reported.
Winds in North Wales reached about 129 km per hour. The flooding of the rails forced the trains to be canceled and the main railway line to London was blocked due to a falling tree, BTA reported.
In Wales, 21,000 homes were without power due to the storm. Most of the power supply has been restored, but 1,700 households remain without power.
Some 1,000 people had to be evacuated from a flooded trailer park in Northampton at Christmas.
There is a danger of an even greater rise in the level of the rivers, authorities warned.
The storm also affected northern France, leaving 12,000 homes without power. The coastal regions of Normandy and Brittany are the most affected.
Meteorological services have warned of strong winds and high waves along the Atlantic coast.
