Former U.S. National Security Agency employee Edward Snowden and his wife Lindsay Mills announced on Twitter that they had a son, TASS reported, cited by BTA.
“Merry Christmas, Baby” is said in the post on Mills’ account, accompanied by a general photo of the family.
Earlier, Snowden’s attorney Anatoly Kucherena told TASS that Snowden’s son will acquire citizenship based on place of birth. Snowden himself ordered him to prepare documents requesting dual citizenship: the United States and Russia, but Russian law does not provide for that possibility. According to Kucherena, Snowden’s wife also intended to seek Russian citizenship.
In October 2014, Lindsay Mills, an acrobat and blogger from the United States, came to Moscow for Snowden. The couple officially married in 2017.
In 2013, Snowden published data on a number of methods used by US intelligence services, including illegal wiretapping of foreign leaders. Escaping persecution in the United States, he sent asylum applications to various countries and in 2014 received a temporary residence permit in Russia.
In the United States, he faces trial on charges of espionage and up to 20 years in prison. Representatives of the US administration have repeatedly stated that they consider Snowden a traitor and do not intend to forgive him because he has caused serious damage to US national security.
