Hectic preparation for the festive table hours before one of the most important Christian holidays – Christmas Eve. This year, under the sign of the pandemic and isolation, more and more families prefer to order food in a restaurant instead of cooking it at home.

Young and old: everyone in Kamelia Ruzheva’s family will roll up their sleeves on December 24 from dark dawn to sit around a slender table at the end of the day.

“Our idea is to spend time together. For us, as parents, this is the greatest gift,” said Camelia.

Eastern desserts with a Christmas scent

For the Christmas Eve table, many Bulgarians still rely only on their grandmother’s recipes. If we look at the official prices on the stock market, this year the Christmas table will be cheaper than the one in 2019. However, the advice of the experts is to be careful when buying, because the number of unfair traders on holidays is high.

The COVID-19 pandemic also left its mark on the Christmas Eve table. After being closed for the holidays, many restaurants switched to offering a slim table for big parties.

What do Christmas Eve traditions dictate?

“We have been considering for a long time whether to make a menu for Christmas and Christmas Eve, but the interest is enormous. We depend on waiters and bartenders to be suppliers,” said Georgi Yanev, chef.

More than 70% of Bulgarians will spend Christmas Eve and Christmas in a close family circle. Restaurants also meet this condition: they prepare Christmas menus for two.

Whether the dishes are prepared at home or in a modern way, in a restaurant, the hope of all of us is one, that is, that the new year is better.
