The Prime Minister stressed that the right to self-determination is a sovereign right and Bulgaria was the first to recognize the sovereignty of the Republic of North Macedonia. He said that as Europeans, Bulgarians must respect the right of their neighbors to identify themselves as Macedonians who speak Macedonian and have their own roots.

“It is true that we have a common history, but we also have a different one from theirs,” Zaev added.

Zaev: We have to find a solution with Bulgaria, but it is not clear what the problem is.

The prime minister added that the two countries must show common sense and accept the common history as something that makes their friendship even closer and their cooperation even better, rather than something that divides them.

He said that Skopje is facing a difficult period because no one imagined that Bulgaria could veto its European integration.

“It is painful and tragic … It is our duty to open perspectives for citizens, for our children, and if we are smart enough, we will use history as something to come together and let historians deal with history,” he said. Prime Minister Zaev.
