No evidence that it responds differently to vaccines, experts say

The most contagious strain of coronavirus, registered in the UK, has also been found in the Netherlands, Denmark and Australia, the BBC reports.

The only continent without COVID-19

According to the World Health Organization, the new strain of the virus is spreading faster than the old one, but it is no more deadly. There is no evidence that it reacts differently to vaccines, experts say.

Today, the Netherlands imposed a ban on passenger flights from the UK until January 1 due to the new type of coronavirus.

The decision was made after samples taken earlier this month revealed the same new strain of coronavirus as the UK one. In anticipation of “greater clarity” on the situation in the UK, the Dutch government said that the “additional risk of the new strain of virus being introduced into the Netherlands should be minimized as much as possible”.

Mark Rutte’s government also said it will work with other EU member states in the coming days to “explore ways to further reduce the risk of the new strain of virus being transmitted from the UK.”

WHO epidemiologist Maria van Kerhove said experts had “tracked mutations around the world since the beginning of the pandemic.” WHO has contacted UK officials about the new strain. Mutations in the virus are often identified, Dr. Van Kerch said, adding that it is important to understand “what these mutations do and how they behave.”
