IN on Saturday, Greek police said they had destroyed one of the country’s main tobacco smuggling organizations. The news was preceded by a police operation in a factory capable of producing more than one billion cigarettes a year, AFP reported, cited by BGNES.
Nearly 40 people were arrested during the operation at more than 20 locations in the capital and near Athens earlier this week, police said in a statement.
Eight more people are wanted in the case. The police action led to the “arrest” of nearly 92 million cigarettes, more than 112 kilograms of processed and unprocessed tobacco, and 75 million cigarette box labels. A serious fleet of more than 40 trucks, dump trucks and trailers, most of them with Bulgarian license plates, was also seized.
The loss of tax revenue from the operation of the network, which has been active since 2016, is estimated at about 20 million euros, police said.
