Today, the Orthodox Church honors Saint Ignatius the God Bearer, one of the disciples of John the Theologian.
S t. Ignacio lived in the second century. Affected by the fate of most of the early Christians, as a result of the persecution against them, Saint Ignatius found his martyrdom. He dies on the stage of the Roman Colosseum, destroyed by beasts.
Ignazhden is one of the great winter holidays that precedes Christmas. It is distributed throughout the ethnic territory of Bulgaria.
In northern Bulgaria, the day of Saint Ignatius is called Ignazhden, Idinak (Edinak). In southern Bulgaria, this holiday is called Idignazhden, Ignatyovden (in the Rhodopes) and Polaz or Polyazovden (in Kotlensko).
According to Christian beliefs, the labor pains of the Mother of God begin on Saint Ignatius’ day and last until Christmas Eve. The days during this period are called “Martyrs”. So women don’t have to do any housework to conceive and give birth easily.
The most characteristic of the festival is the custom of “climbing”. Who will enter Ignazhden’s house first, one can guess what next year will be like. If the performance is good, in the house throughout the year there will be luck and success in everything. If you are not lucky, during the year there will be no prosperity for the home and especially on the farm.
The name day is celebrated by: Ignat, Ognyan, Ognyana, Plamen, Plamena.
