“The water shortage for the metropolis of Istanbul, which has recently reached critical levels due to the drought, is an extremely serious problem. Everyone is alarmed that Istanbul is at risk of a possible catastrophic earthquake. But the danger of drought and shortages of water is so great that it exceeds that of a possible earthquake in the future “.
This was stated by the head of the Meteorological Laboratory of the Candilli Observatory in Istanbul, Adil Tek. At a press conference, he described the current drought as disastrous.
According to him, global warming, natural anomalies and drought have caused a critical drop in the waters of the dams. To these factors are added the uncontrolled growth of the metropolis population (according to unofficial data it is about 20 million along with migrants from Syria and other countries) and deforestation.
“Water shortages caused by drought threaten food security and food chains, which have recently been high on the production list. And this is putting enormous pressure on the economy. In a pandemic it is extremely important. the protection of agricultural production, which is the one that suffers the most from the drought, “he said.
The weather in Istanbul has been monitored for 109 years by the Candilli Observatory Meteorological Laboratory at Bogazici University, which was founded in the 19th century and has a Centennial Station certificate from the World Weather Service.
Its manager, Adil Tek, pointed out that a special Climate Diary is kept in the laboratory, in which measurements are recorded.
“Since 1911, the climate in Istanbul has warmed by an average of about 1.5 degrees, parallel to Europe and the world. This means serious problems in agriculture, industry and all other sectors. Under such conditions, no economic sustainability can be guaranteed, “he added. he says.
To face the problem, the laboratory proposes the implementation of a symbolic regime in the water supply of the metropolis.
Just as the catastrophic earthquake of 1999, which claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people, made institutions and the population aware of the seriousness of the situation and measures were taken, so must the danger of drought and lack of water. “2 hours of interruption of the water supply in the metropolis will help to create a conscious approach to the situation. This is the only solution, otherwise there is a real danger of disaster, which will be much greater than the earthquake, ”said Adil Tek.
