An attempted theft of a tanker truck may be at the root of the incident with a propane-butane compound at the Borovo station. During the night, a gas leak caused the evacuation of the population around the railway.
Only the bold intervention of a Byala firefighter prevented a possible incident, which brought back memories of Hitrino.
The alarmed Chief Inspector Svilen Rachev, chief of the fire service in Byala, personally managed to stop the gas leak.
“It’s not scary, but like any normal person, I’m worried. I can’t say what the reason is, but about half a turn I had to turn off the tap itself,” Rachev told BTV.
Biserka Yakimova, 81, one of the people evacuated around the station, is also grateful to the firefighters.
“We were scared because we are close to the cars, we see them. My friend calls: “Get out … go.” We have another house, my husband is sick, but I put it in and called my grandson, he took us and took us, ”says Biserka.
The manager of the company, which owns propane-butane, says the tap was opened in the event of an attempted theft.
“A thief looking for something for himself, this tank is a warehouse from which to fill his tube. Most likely, all these accidents occur, energetically speaking, accidents, but a diesel, gasoline leak, in 99% of cases is theft. “A pressure screw valve, which is turned at 25 atmospheres, cannot be opened if you don’t try to unscrew it,” said Milcho Vassilev, Gastrade’s manager.
The line passes through the central part of the city.
“We discovered that there was a very strong propane-butane odor in the air throughout the central part. Hitrino’s tragedy is not yet forgotten. You know what happened there. Here, perhaps, the damage and deaths would be much more, since the tanks here are much more, ”says Borovo Mayor Valentin Panayotov.
An investigation has been launched into the case, which will be sent to the Ruse District Attorney’s Office to clarify whether anyone is guilty.
