More than 50 kilograms of cocaine have been found in hiding places carved out of processed boards, Varna District Attorney Krassimir Konov announced today. The goods were in a container unloaded from a ship in the port of Varna West. The drugs traveled from Suriname through Bulgaria to the Netherlands.
The container was selected for inspection using the risk analysis method by customs officials on November 11, Konov said. According to him, after the discovery of the secrets on the boards and the cocaine found, the pre-trial proceeding began and SANS employees also participated in the investigation.
234 packages were found on the boards and the purity of the active component of the hidden drug reached 70.8 percent. The assessment carried out for the needs of court proceedings is that the value of the drugs exceeds BGN 12.7 million, Konov explained. According to him, if cocaine is mixed and marketed, its quantity will increase at least five times.
In the course of the investigation, the final recipients of the goods were identified in association with Eurojust and Europol. Netherlands authorities also provided assistance, and on 16 December they arrested three citizens of the Kingdom believed to be involved in the crime. 76,000 euros, drugs and computers were seized. When the case was started in our country, a European arrest warrant was sent to one of the detainees in the Netherlands, Konov added.
The ship carried a variety of cargo on predetermined trips, that is. it has nothing to do with the case, said Svetoslav Kalinov, head of the anti-drug department of the North Sea Territorial Directorate at the Customs Agency. He specified that the container with the boards had to be unloaded at the port of Varna-West, after which it was loaded onto a truck and left for the Netherlands.
The cargo was in transit, Kalinov added. A Bulgarian company also participates in its logistics, which is listed as the recipient of the goods and whose manager is a Dutchman. According to prosecutor Konov, in the course of the investigation, two Bulgarians were found to be related to the goods, but the data at this time shows that they were not aware of what was hidden on the boards, BTA reported.
