“I think we failed. Many people died and that is horrible,” said the monarch in an excerpt from a documentary on the royal family broadcast today by Swedish media.
Sweden, with a population of 10 million, has recorded 7,800 deaths from COVID-19.
“The pandemic was terrible, given the people who died and the pain and frustration of many families and many businessmen who are on their knees,” added the Swedish king.
Earlier this week, a government-appointed commission concluded that the country had failed to protect the elderly in nursing homes and other long-term accommodations during the pandemic, resulting in a large number of deaths.
