Mystery surrounds the loneliest house in the world, built on a small desert island almost 100 years ago.
Images of the white building, “perched” on a green hill in Elyrei, a small island in southern Iceland, have appeared on social media.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, the picturesque site, which is the northeast of the Westmannaire archipelago and is fully exposed to the elements, was home to a handful of families.
In the 1930s, however, the few remaining inhabitants moved to the mainland in search of a better life.
Since then, the remote island has been completely deserted and the lonely house has spawned a series of increasingly incredible theories.
According to a rumor, the house was built by an eccentric billionaire who planned to retire there in the event of a zombie apocalypse.
Others suggest that it is owned by a fanatically religious hermit.
At one point, it was even speculated that singer Bjork owned the strange house and was even negotiating with the government to buy the island.
Unfortunately, the reality is less exciting.. The white building is actually a cabin built by the Elirei Hunting Association.
After the last inhabitants left the island, it became clear that the abundance of fish and puffins (Stupid Kairi) also decreased.
To facilitate hunting trips, the association is building the house as a shelter, which has a sauna powered by a rainwater harvesting system.

Although it seems idyllic, the cabin in the middle of nowhere has its drawbacks.
There is no electricity, running water, or internal plumbing, but there is an incredible view.
The island has been declared a nature reserve and protected area, as it is an important nesting area for petrels and other seabirds.
