All citizens of Bulgaria under the age of 40 will be able to enroll in compulsory military service. Said changes in the Armed Forces Reserve Law were approved by the deputies on second reading.

Volunteer service in the reserve is for a period of 6 months, and volunteers will receive remuneration for their service and will be provided with medical and social insurance.

Urgent service to be carried out twice a year, with 300 people in military training every six months. The Defense Ministry estimates that the costs of this will amount to around BGN 8.3 million per year.

During the first 3 months, volunteers will receive initial and specialized training, and then until the end of their service they will carry out tasks in the military units.

The deputies also raised the age limit for service in the voluntary reserve for officers with high military ranks from 63 to 65 years.

Students and students will also be able to carry out military training for the defense of the Homeland. The trainings will take place during class hours, within no less than a total of ten teaching hours for the designated class hour stages.

Students will be trained to acquire knowledge and skills related to the defense of the homeland, actions for survival in military crises, as well as the missions and tasks of the armed forces.

For students, training will be possible in elective and / or optional classes. Students pursuing bachelor’s and master’s degrees and those with higher education may apply to a higher military school for the qualification of “Reserve Officer”.

The training of pupils and students is borne by the budget of the Ministry of Defense.
