The basis of our identity is our language, and then the common history with our compatriots. This was stated by the President of North Macedonia, Stevo Pendarovski, in an interview with euobserver.
Macedonian language and identity will not be discussed. Pendarovski said it was no secret that the Macedonian language rules were established in 1945.
He admits that the language is very similar to Bulgarian. At the same time, he claims that this is not the same language.
According to him, it makes no sense to claim that Macedonian history up to 1945 was actually Bulgarian. Pendarovski does not consider it realistic to say that then the citizens woke up and decided that they were already ethnic Macedonians, since until then they were ethnic Bulgarians.
According to him, it does not matter what Bulgaria thinks about the issue if it does not stop the European negotiations. The position that the Macedonian language and identity did not exist until 1944, with the idea of forming a non-Bulgarian identity, cannot be disputed.
Bulgaria insists that when North Macedonia joins the EU, any agreement in Macedonian must be indicated in community documents as a language that only exists in the country’s statute. The country does not support negotiations with the Macedonian state.
From there, they insist on clarifying bilateral issues first. Experts believe that Prime Minister Zoran Zaev takes two positions, one towards Macedonian citizens and the other towards Bulgarians.
