The electricity distribution company CEZ, which supplies electricity throughout western Bulgaria, announced that it has discovered the electricity theft, which is the largest in the company’s history.

According to preliminary calculations by CEZ, the monthly electricity stolen is approximately equal to the average monthly consumption of 4,250 families.

The abuse was discovered on December 12. Company teams and the police carried out inspections for electricity theft in Herakovo village, municipality. Bozhurishte, due to established consumption anomalies in the area.

The established crime is in an outbuilding on the village cooperative farm, used as a farm for cryptocurrencies.

During the inspections an illegal connection to a medium voltage network was found. It powers transformer machines illegally installed in the building, and caters to more than 1,000 computer setups used to dig up cryptocurrencies.

CEZ Distribution teams use new tools and methodologies to calculate network losses, directing them to specific points to search for illegal connections. The tests are carried out on a daily basis and the anti-theft department conducts inspections constantly, weekdays and weekends.

The teams from CEZ Distribución and the Interior Ministry worked through the night and the equipment found was seized by the police, who are conducting an investigation.
