We have already informed you that in early September 2019, the 36-tonne MV Golden Ray aircraft carrier, which departed from the port of Brunswick in Georgia, USA and carrying 4,300 vehicles, tilted sharply and turned. All 22 crew members were rescued, but not the ship itself or the cars that transported it. Now, the partially flooded 200-meter ship is preparing for the bush by cutting it to pieces along with the cars in it.
According to Car and Driver, the Hyundai-owned ship carried the following car models: Ram 1500, 2500 and 5500, Mercedes, Chevrolet Blazer, and many different Hyundai and Kia. First Coast News reports that investigators say congestion is one of the reasons for the wreck. He could not keep his balance during a sharp turn from port to open sea.
The day before the accident, Golden Ray arrived in Brunswick, where some 285 Hyundai Accent and Kia Forte cars were unloaded. The problem is that instead in the cargo compartment are loaded Kia Telluride crossovers, which are taller and much heavier than unloaded cars. For comparison, a Kia crossover weighs almost two tons, while the Accent and Forte weigh just over 1,000 kilograms. Therefore, the ship’s center of gravity has changed.
According to an investigation by the US Coast Guard, Golden Ray is carrying 1,000 more tons of cargo than it should. And before reaching Brunswick, the ship released at least 1,500 metric tons of ballast water. Thanks to this ballast, it would be possible to balance the boat and prevent it from capsizing, but Kia’s heavier SUVs are still considered to be the main reason.
