Albania’s Interior Minister Sander Leshi resigned after a police officer killed a 25-year-old man in a collision two days ago for violating the imposed curfew and the case sparked violent protests, DPA reported, cited by BTA.
Now is the time to close a chapter of my work at the head of the Interior Ministry, Leshi wrote on Facebook, taking responsibility for the “unjust loss” of human life.
On Tuesday, a police officer fatally shot Claudian Rasha, who met him during the curfew, introduced by the coronavirus. The policeman said he thought Rasha was armed. The police officer was arrested and is under investigation.
Protests broke out over what happened on Wednesday, demanding Leshi’s resignation.
There was also a protest in the capital Tirana last night. Once again, the protesters disobeyed curfews and threw stones and pirates at government buildings. Eventually, police used a water cannon to disperse the crowd, TV Klan TV reported.
Smaller protests took place in several other cities.
