The ninth federal execution of the year was carried out in the United States, the first in a transition period between two 130-year presidential administrations, the Associated Press reported.

The executed Brendan Bernard is a member of a Texas street gang convicted of his role in the murder of an Iowa religious couple more than two decades ago when he was 18 years old.

In the weeks leading up to President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, four more executions are planned by federal authorities, including one for today.

Bernard’s execution is a rare case of a convict who received the most severe punishment for a crime committed when he was in his late teens, BTA quotes.

Several celebrities, including Kim Kardashian West, have asked President Donald Trump to commute Bernard’s sentence to life in prison.

The Trump administration resumed federal executions in July after a 17-year hiatus despite the spread of the coronavirus in US prisons, AP recalls.
