Borissov to Buchkovski: solutions can be found – Bulgaria

“I have always believed that solutions can be found at the negotiating table. Present and future generations will not forgive either Bulgaria or the Republic of North Macedonia for not finding a compromise that gives them perspective.” This was stated by Prime Minister Boyko Borissov during his meeting today with the Special Envoy of the Government of the Republic of North Macedonia for Bulgaria, Vlado Buckovski. The meeting took place in the government VIP before the prime minister left for Brussels, where he will participate in the Council of Europe.

In order to find a sustainable and lasting solution to the outstanding outstanding issues in bilateral relations, according to the Bulgarian Prime Minister, a pragmatic, frank and well-intentioned approach is needed, expressed in concrete actions.

Borissov pointed out that it is important that relations of mutual trust return to strict and irreversible compliance with all the commitments made by the Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighborliness and Cooperation, signed in 2017.

“Bulgaria has always professed Euro-Atlantic values, which is why during our presidency of the EU Council we put the issue of the European perspective of the Western Balkans first,” Prime Minister Borissov said.

He was adamant that Bulgaria has so far done everything possible to integrate the Western Balkan countries into NATO and the EU. In this context, Borissov recalled that it was as a result of Bulgaria’s support for the European future of the Republic of North Macedonia that the Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighbor and Cooperation was signed.

Vlado Buckovski, RS Macedonia’s special envoy to resolve the disputed issues with Sofia, arrived yesterday on his first visit to Bulgaria, after being appointed to this post. He spoke with Chancellor Ekaterina Zaharieva. At the joint press conference after the meeting, the Bulgarian head of diplomacy said: “Words alone are no longer enough, we want facts.” Zaharieva noted that negotiations are continuing to find a solution.

For his part, Buckovski acknowledged that trust between the two countries has been violated by Skopje’s breach of the Friendship Treaty, and stressed that the Republic of Macedonia is determined to implement it.
