The Verivox portal has been preparing the so-called iPhone Index, which shows how long people in a country have to work to buy the latest model of iPhone. In the current case, it is an iPhone 12 with 64 gigabytes of memory.
3 to 85 days
The calculations are made on the basis of the average gross salary in the respective country. Then the monthly salary is divided into 21, which is the average number of working days per month. This makes it clear how many working days it takes to purchase the iPhone in question. As the prices of Apple phones do not differ much from country to country, the iPhone is well suited as a basis for comparing purchasing power in different countries, the ranking authors explain.
Here’s what the current iPhone index shows: While Germans have to work an average of eight days to buy the latest iPhone, Liechtenstein citizens with the highest income collect the amount in about three days. It is Liechtenstein that tops the Verivox ranking, and at the bottom there is Moldova, whose residents have to work an average of 85 days to be able to buy the same iPhone.
In this ranking, Bulgaria occupies an intermediate place: Bulgarians have to work an average of 41 days to buy an iPhone 12. In neighboring Romania it takes 24 days, in Greece 20 days, in Turkey 36 days and in the north of Macedonia. 76 days.
More numbers
From the Verivox ranking we also learn that in poorer countries the iPhone is often more expensive than in richer countries. While in Germany the iPhone 12 costs about 900 euros, in North Macedonia it sells for more than 1,000 euros. The iPhone is relatively expensive in Greece and Hungary, where its price exceeds 950 euros. According to the Verivox portal, the price differences are due to different import taxes and fees.
The index also allows for this comparison: while Macedonians and Moldovans cannot buy half an iPhone with a salary, consumers in Liechtenstein can buy more than seven phones.
