The Lazio team made it 2: 2 at home to Bruges and qualified for the knockout phase of the Champions League. The Roman Eagles needed not to lose today’s game to advance to the next stage and they did their job.
The guests from Belgium played more than half with one man less, but still managed to reach a draw, which, however, did not work out for them. Bruges finished third and will continue to play in the Europa League.
The match started well for the hosts and in the 12th minute Inzaghi’s alumni were already ahead in the result. Joaquín Correa opened for the hosts, but only three minutes later Brugge returned to the game, leveling the score. Ruud Vomer was suitable for the guests.
The goal did not bother the home players and they kept attacking. Lazio’s best game came in the 27th minute when a penalty was awarded in favor of the team’s cut. Ciro Imobile hit the spot from the penalty spot and gave his team another lead.
In the final minutes of the first half, the Bruges team were left with one man less on the field, after Edward Sobol received a third yellow card.
The expulsion of the Belgian player seemed to calm the hosts in the second half, and this could have been a joke in bad taste.
Despite the advantage for Lazio, the Eagles never managed to reach a third goal to decide everything in the match. Little by little, the hosts slowed down and accepted the match in their own field, which the Brugge players took advantage of in the best way.
In the 76th minute, they tied the score after Vanaken scored with a 2: 2 header.
Winged by their goal, the Brujas players continued looking for a third goal that would qualify them for the next phase. In the continuation of the match they were very close to scoring a goal, but luck fell on the hosts. After a shot from De Ketelare, the ball hit the left post.
Thus, Lazio was ahead after finishing second in the group with 10 points, and the first is Borussia (Dortmund) with 13.
