Borussia Dortmund won Group F in the Champions League this season after rejecting Zenit and beating them 2-1. Westfalia accumulated 13 points, followed by Lazio (10 points), Bruges (8 points) and Zenit (1 point).

Both teams started very openly, but the first shots were blocked or missed. That changed shortly after a quarter of an hour later, when Sebastian Driusi opened the scoring after a happy rebound at the feet of Mats Hummels.

Borussia attacked immediately and Torgan Azar fired a dangerous shot, stopped by goalkeeper Kerzhakov. Several more actions followed, which were deprived of the necessary acuity.

Half an hour after kick-off, Zenit blocked their opponent’s defense for the second time, but Serdar Azmun’s goal was correctly disallowed by an ambush.

Towards the end of the first half, Judd Bellingham’s shot went just over the bar, and seconds before the break Marco Royce rocked the right post.

Immediately after the resumption of the game, Kuzyaev could have doubled, but Hitz saved. In the following minutes, Borussia did not look so offensive and several times Mats Hummels intervened with class in defense.

In the middle of the second half, Borussia tied. Hummels’ shot stopped close after Royce’s pass, but Lukasz Piscek proved to be the most resourceful and made a successful pass.

In the 78th minute, Lucien Favre’s boys made a complete turn. Axel Witsel did not hit the ball well when shooting with his left foot outside the penalty area, but scored it precisely in the lower right corner. The Belgian showed respect for his former club and is not happy with his goal.

There was no clear goal position until the end and the German runner-up finished deservedly at the top of the group, which is sure to mean a more palatable opponent in the knockout round draw.

Zenit – Borussia Dortmund 1: 2

1: 0 Sebastian Driusi – 16 ‘
eleven Lukasz Piscek – 68 ‘
1: 2 Axel Witsel – 78 ‘
