The fight against COVID-19 has taken a historic leap after the first Pfizer / BioNtech vaccine was administered to a person outside of a clinical trial, SkyNews and the BBC reported.

Expert: COVID-19 vaccines are an improved version of existing ones

Margaret Keenan, 90, became the first person in the world to receive the drug as part of a UK vaccination program.

Canada receives Pfizer vaccine this month

Keenan, who has lived in Coventry for six decades but is originally from Northern Ireland, received the vaccine at the city’s University Hospital at 6:31 am local time.

She says it’s a “privilege” and “the best anticipated birthday gift she could wish for,” as it would mean she can spend time with family and friends on New Years Eve. “

The UK became the first country in the world to approve the COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech. This gave the green light to initiate a mass vaccination.

Britain has already ordered 40 million doses, enough to vaccinate 20 million people.

The drug should be stored at a temperature of minus 70 degrees, and in an ordinary refrigerator its shelf life is only five days. Therefore, the vaccine will initially be administered in 50 hospitals and, as of December 14, general practitioners will place it in more than 1,000 vaccination centers across the country.

More than two-thirds of Britons say they will be vaccinated against COVID-19
