Valteri Botas and George Russell finished eighth and ninth respectively in the Sahir Grand Prix. Boots started from pole, Russell edging past him at turn one and leading most of the race.
About 20 laps before the end, however, they pulled out a safe car and the two stopped in the pits to search for new tires. However, the team confused the tires they put on the drivers, causing George and Boots to lose positions. A little later, the Briton blew out a tire while advancing second and had to stop again.
Toto Wolff said the reason for the confusion at the stop was actually a malfunction in the team’s radio. He also clarified that this stop was not necessary and they just made sure through it.
“Today was a colossal shoot. What happened was that we called both teams on the radio to get the tires out. George’s team didn’t hear that call. One of our radios didn’t work and the wrong people came out with the wrong tires.
“We found out as soon as we saw that Valteri’s tires were missing. It turned out that his tires were on George’s car.

Although he won the first points of his career, Russell is understandably disappointed in ninth place, after leading most of the race.
“To run the race and then make it happen … I don’t know, but it hurt a lot after I got out of the car. I immediately spoke to my parents. I know they felt the same way. But they told me I had something to be proud of. Toto, James and Bono said the same thing.
“I hope to give Toto problems to solve in the future,” Russell said, hoping to get another chance for Mercedes, either in Abu Dhabi or in the coming seasons.
