The drug prevents the virus from multiplying, testing it on ferrets.

The oral antiviral drug molnupiravir completely stopped transmission of the coronavirus within 24 hours, the BBC reported.

According to a team of researchers at the Georgia State University Institute of Biomedical Sciences, the drug prevents the virus from multiplying, thereby stopping its spread.

For the study, researchers led by Dr. Richard Plemper tested molnupiravir’s ability to stop COVID-19 in ferrets.

“This is the first demonstration of an oral drug that stops the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in an instant,” Plemper added.

According to study co-author Dr. Robert Cox, “We believe that ferrets are an appropriate model of transmission due to their ability to spread the virus; most of them do not develop severe symptoms, which is very reminiscent of the way SARS-CoV-2 spreads to adolescents.

For their study, the specialists infected ferrets with coronavirus and began treating them with molnupiravir as soon as the animals began to spread the virus through their noses. Once placed in close contact with other healthy animals, none of the animals become ill.
