Ivana’s drawings are inspired by fear, but also by hopes of a global pandemic

Ivana Stoichkova, the daughter of Yordanka Hristova, opened and closed her first digital exhibition at the gallery in the capital “Dose” with almost no one knowing about this five-day artistic performance (5-12.11). Quite atypical for an artist …

Ivana Stoichkova was born in Sofia in 1980 (the photo above is from 2018). Graduated in cinematography from the NBU School of Screen Arts and Graphic Design. It makes unique boutique furniture mainly out of wood. He lived in the United States.

He has participated in group exhibitions over the years with acrylic paints, as well as furniture at Sofia Design Week, One Design Week, Mikser Festival and others.

Ivana herself was very laconic with her works. “They had to be seen in the context of the room (they accompanied rhyming lyrics, music …. (Ivana writes only in English – ba). The author’s choice fell on a recording that reproduces the heartbeat in the context of a cardiogram. According to her, the poems would touch the viewer and be understood only in combination with all the arts included in the exhibition.

The Doza Gallery is new in the artistic space of the capital and among its owners is Maria Ampova. She and like-minded people are looking for a salon to support and assist young artists in their creative experiments and provocations. The idea is for Doza to be a gallery space, providing a platform for various projects with a focus on contemporary art. It is currently closed due to measures against the pandemic, something that has irony, because it was Ivana who recently painted and shared her fears and hopes with the public right there.

This is what the gallery owners say about the exhibition:

“2020 COVISUAL and

Intimate Exhibition – A series of digital drawings that Ivana Stoichkova created every night on her phone and posted every day for 29 weeks. A ritual that invites the viewer to a double game of imagination. Towards a voluntary return to the time in which the author has concluded an image – of feeling, thought, dream.

Ivana Stoichkova’s first solo exhibition appears at a time when the world has adopted a new way of existence, but it is precisely in the transitory nature of reality that we best see who we are. In this imposed vision, the author tries to rethink the last few months, in which a virus transformed the daily life and routine of millions of people.

Quick drawings and intimate texts for them are

mise-en-scène, saturated

with mixed and

ambiguous emotions,

some angry

others anxious, with slight touches of sentimentality and nostalgia.

“At the heart of the title is this COVID-19, which flooded us and in moments of isolation I spontaneously began to draw digital drawings on my smartphone. I posted them on social media every night and in the morning. This process continues to this day. It all started without compromising, until at one point there were inquiries about impressions, things started to take some shape, to attract interest, so I thought of an exhibition “, says Ivana Stoichkova. The project is a kind of time study in which each of us can recognize ”.

“We were here and are still mostly alone. Literally not. Isolated. Alienated. Forced out of the comfort zone. Tested on your adaptability and resilience of thought.

We look inside

in itself. We want

we share. We are thirsty

Isolation pushes us towards each other. Days go by. Calendar and slow. The events are more personal than social. Pain. Fear. Joy. Love. Every day. I. You. We “, says Ivana at the opening of the exhibition. And he shows it with his “momentary and emotional” drawings, the result of a sudden thought, a memory, some notes, a look out the window …

Continue painting at the same rate. One of his most recent topics is the abortion ban in Poland. Once the quarantine falls, we will wait for you in “Dose” or in another gallery. He promised new projects and has something to show.

“Ivana wanted to take the pulse of time. That is why you can hear the rhythm of a beating heart in the gallery. She is a thinking child,” says her mother, the beloved and popular singer Yordanka Hristova. Recently in a conversation he presumed that all his posters, cards and other promotional material are the work of his daughter, who necessarily takes pictures of the pop star.

“Our friends saw the pictures. They were delighted.

I was myself

surprised and

impressed

although I know my son well. Ivana has different and original points of view. That is why I fully supported her for this exhibition. The 2020 COVISUAL title is provocative and speaks volumes about your quick thinking and imagination, your ability to play with words and images. I fully encourage her in her quest and in her art, says her famous mother, who always supports her daughter’s every choice.

“My daughter is different, but I love and adore her very much,” Yordanka Hristova said on the “VIP Brother” show in 2014. This became a real sensation, and the singer’s words were distorted and complemented.
