Only 25 of the 249 members of the party of the current US president, Republican Donald Trump, recognize the victory of Democrat Joe Biden in the country’s presidential elections, reports the “Washington Post”.
Biden’s team has reached out to aides to every Republican lawmaker in Congress, which is divided into a Senate and a House of Representatives. As a result, only 25 congressmen and senators openly acknowledged Biden’s victory, two considered Trump a winner, and the remaining 222 did not provide a clear answer to the question of who they thought won the election.
Furthermore, only 30 Republicans have openly declared their willingness to recognize Biden as the legitimate president if the Electoral College votes for him on December 14. At the same time, 9 MPs are strongly against the current head of the White House’s attempts to question the results and answer the question.
“The poll shows the fear of the majority of Republicans of the outgoing president and his control of the party, despite his new status as the third sitting president in 80 years to lose in a bid for reelection,” the newspaper said.
The American elections took place on November 3. According to estimates by major US media, Biden has the support of more than 270 members of the Electoral College, whose votes he needs to defeat Trump.
