Bulgaria remains at a record mortality rate, but there is a decrease in morbidity

For the second week in a row, Bulgaria reported a record mortality from Covid-19. On Friday alone, 156 people died from the virus. The average death rate for the last week is 140 people per day. Our country remains in the first place in terms of mortality in Europe during the last 14 days. However, there are first signs of a decline in morbidity, chief state health inspector Dr. Angel Kunchev said at a briefing at the Cabinet on Friday.

“For the first time in 3-4 weeks, Bulgaria has a drop in incidence below 600 per 100,000 people. And Kardzhali is leaving the red zone for the first time in three weeks,” he said. At the European level, our country has also dropped a position in terms of morbidity from 11th to 12th place.

“We see the first signs of a change in trend, which we hope will be confirmed next week and show the importance of the measures that have been taken,” Kunchev said.

He noted that it is normal for mortality to remain high for the moment, as it will be followed by a fall in morbidity with a delay of about 3 weeks.

During the last 24 hours, 3,280 new cases of coronavirus infection were registered in the country and 1,935 were cured.

The tests carried out are 9082, which means that 36% of the samples are positive by the last day.

There are currently 93,549 active cases and 6,766 people are being treated in hospitals. The number of people housed in intensive care units continues to increase. There are already 523, which is a record since the start of the pandemic.

The positive trend in the data is that there is a slight decrease in the number of newly discovered cases. With an average of 3,300 positive tests per day a week ago, the average number of positive tests has now dropped to around 2,700 per day, calculated weekly. The problem is that there is a permanent reduction in the number and number of PCR tests performed, which now rarely exceed 9,000 per day.

The highest number of newly infected is in Sofia: 550. Since the start of the pandemic, there are 46,039 registered in Sofia with coronavirus. During the last 24 hours, 378 new cases have been detected in Burgas, 359 in Varna and 321 in Plovdiv. In Sofia is the largest decrease in the growth rate of new cases – almost double.
