A large-scale gendarmerie operation, carried out jointly in Moasac, Bordeaux and Bulgaria, destroyed a huge network of cigarette smuggling and pimping. 150 policemen from the French gendarmerie participated in the action. Six people have been charged with cigarette smuggling and prostitution between France and Bulgaria, BGNES said.
According to the French gendarmerie, the six detained Bulgarians, five men and one woman between the ages of 21 and 70, are charged with criminal conspiracy to smuggle cigarettes. One of the suspects is also accused of money laundering, covering up of the organization’s activities and inciting prostitution. Another person was arrested in Bulgaria with a European arrest warrant.
Employees of the Tarn-et-Garonne specialized prosecutor’s office, the Bordeaux investigation services and the financial investigation services (customs and tax services) also participated in this large operation. It was held on Monday simultaneously in France (Bordeaux and Moasac in the Tarn-et-Garonne department) and in Bulgaria. There are a total of 11 arrests in both countries.
The operation, according to the gendarmerie, is the result of several months of investigation, which began in February 2019, with the observation of a Bulgarian man involved in the concealment of stolen goods in the Landes. Investigations revealed the introduction of young Bulgarians suspected of prostitution into Bordeaux and evidence of cigarette smuggling. The benefit of this smuggling is estimated between 200,000 and 400,000 euros.
During the operation, some 90,000 euros in cash, 8 vehicles and 650 boxes of cigarettes were seized, as well as several properties in Bulgaria, investments that laundered money.
