EU Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhei has called on the Republic of North Macedonia to make additional efforts and understand Bulgaria’s concerns to find a mutually acceptable solution, Macedonian website Sakam Dakum reported, BNR reported.
Varhei told a meeting of the European Parliament’s foreign policy committee yesterday that it was “a matter of political will, commitment and determination” and expressed the readiness of the European Commission to help find a solution. The European Commissioner warned that the Republic of North Macedonia and Albania are less likely to start accession talks with the EU this year.
An analysis published today by Politico on the occasion of a year of EC work under Ursula von der Leyen says that many diplomats accuse Varhei of being too lenient towards Sofia on the issue of the Bulgarian blockade of Macedonia. However, most believe that the main problem is that the European People’s Party is not strong enough towards Boyko Borissov, whose GERB party is a member of the PPE, writes the Macedonian website, citing Politico.
