“It was just a formality.” Two captains lead their teams. Does not matter. Diego Maradona was for the big games. We played in groups with them, for Argentina this game was something simple. It is no coincidence that he nearly led the team to the world title on his own.
– Did you have personal communication with Maradona before or after the game?
“Then no.” We did not know foreign languages, how to communicate with him? It is not possible only with facial expressions and gestures. In our time, the means of communication were not as developed as they are now. Now you can see what you want from all the games in the world with one click. And then where to see Maradona ?! I saw it live twice in France, a match against Toulouse, if I’m not mistaken. Where to see it in Argentina? He just waits for the World Cup or when he goes to Napoli to broadcast his match in the European tournaments. That is, he was an idol, something great and at the same time distant, unattainable, because except in the stadium, people had nowhere to see him.
– Could Argentina become world champion in 1994?
– I am convinced that later they cheated Argentina. There is a lot of politics in everything. Argentina had a strong team and Maradona was in great shape. It was as if after this scandal everything was even worse.
– He is still a controversial person, a genius on the ground, but outside of him there were vices.
“Now that he’s gone, he can be charged with anything.” No one knows what was on his mind. Everyone decides how to act. I saw the Kusturica movie, Maradona, which says you can be around a lot of people, but you feel lonely. Everything else after football seems impersonal, uninteresting, and he’s still looking for the same adrenaline rush.
– Can you compare Maradona and Lionel Messi?
“They both kick with their left foot!” This is what they have in common … I don’t like to compare, each one has achieved something, something else did not suit them. Maradona is world champion, Messi is not successful with the national team. However, Messi has several trophies in the Champions League, 5 Ballon d’Or, while Maradona at club level was his top in Naples with two titles, the UEFA Cup … The same as comparing the time of Pelé . He has not played in Europe, he is not successful as a club compared to other great players, but he is a three-time world champion. You see, everyone has something, but there are no other achievements. We can’t even compare football all these years. Before there were no yellow and red cards, Pelé was kicked and abused and he himself says that if he hadn’t been subjected to such rough play from his opponents, he probably could have developed even better. Now football is completely different, even compared to what Maradona played. Now it is played very simply, based mainly on physics.
