Killed and injured after a car crashed into a pedestrian zone in the western German city of Trier. The incident occurred near the ancient Porta Nigra. According to the police, there were four victims in the incident. They are women of 25 and 73 years, a man of 45 years and a baby of nine months.

The driver of the car was arrested. He resisted arrest. The man is a 51-year-old German from the Trier-Saarburg region. The suspect was drunk. According to a prosecutor, the man had “significant amounts” of alcohol in his blood. He also showed signs of mental problems.

There is still no specific data on the motive for the attack: terrorist, political or religious.

“At the moment, we cannot say anything specific about the motivation for the act,” Trier police spokesman Karl-Peter Jochem said.

Mayor Wolfram Laibe told SWR public television that more than 15 people were injured, some seriously.

During a press conference, the mayor clarified: “The driver was driving uncontrollably and at high speed on the street. I come from the city center and the view was horrible. There was a sneaker lying on the pavement and the girl it belonged to was dead, “Laibe added.

Witnesses also said that the driver of the car sped through the pedestrian zone and deliberately struck people. According to them, it seemed crazy.

The city center is blocked by the police and helicopters are flying over it. Law enforcement officials asked parents to pick up their children from school earlier and citizens to avoid the center. Police continue to urge not to distribute videos and photos of the scene.

Many German politicians have expressed their sympathy for the families of the victims and those killed in the incident. Among them was Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokeswoman, Stephen Seibert. He described what happened in Trier as “painful”.

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov expressed his condolences to the families and relatives of the deceased on behalf of the entire Bulgarian people.

“I also pray for all victims. Such barbarous acts of violence have no place in Europe and the perpetrators responsible must bear the harshest punishments,” Borissov commented on Facebook.

The Foreign Ministry stated that our Consulate General in Frankfurt is in contact with the police in Trier. From there they specify that at 18:30 there is no information on wounded Bulgarian citizens.

The Ministry urges all our compatriots to avoid the vast city center, which is currently closed by the police for procedural and investigative actions.
