Nine Australian soldiers have committed suicide in just three weeks amid a report that elite Australian soldiers have killed civilians in Afghanistan, the Daily Mail reported.

Australian forces recently released a report that found substantial evidence that elite Australian soldiers had committed war crimes in Afghanistan. 39 civilians and prisoners died, and the findings came after questioning hundreds of witnesses. The crimes were committed between 2009 and 2013.

The results of a four-year investigation by the Australian Armed Forces have sparked a strong international reaction. The British edition writes that it is unprecedented in Australian military history that so many soldiers commit suicide in such a short time. The tensions over the investigation are believed to be related to suicides.

Eight men and one woman from the Australian Armed Forces committed suicide. Their possible involvement in war crimes is not yet known, but experts do not rule out that they have decided to end their lives because of the report related to the war in Afghanistan. Among the suicides is veteran Shane Holt (pictured), who took his own life on November 16. He has a 3-year-old son. According to the report, elite soldiers abandoned their standards during bloody battles in Afghanistan, when they were constantly subjected to enormous physical and mental stress.
