Bulgarian Petya, who designed expensive cars, now makes a whole Chinese city

At the time, her father did not regard design as a serious business suitable for his daughter.

Unique cars, innovative trains, green spaces, entire Chinese cities and the name of Bulgaria involved in all this. Thanks to Petya Georgieva-Bertoni, an ambitious young woman who for several years has one goal: to make the most daring dreams of aristocrats, investors and entire countries come true, designing new generation vehicles, urban spaces and impressive buildings. The range of his work is enormous: from developing a revolutionary new leather for car upholstery to designing an entire city.

Petya’s ambition leads her from her native Blagoevgrad to Italy, where she studies “Marketing, Communications and Global Markets”. Nine years later, she’s already working on “some of the most exciting projects in the world,” as she puts it. To a large extent this is the result of discipline and a lot of deprivation, but also a lot of positive thinking.

Since I was little I always drew something. As a child, she often hid her painted models in her grandmother’s closet to save for future ideas.

“Now remind me to look for them as soon as I can go with her,” says Petya with a laugh, adding that she would be curious what she will find there, “maybe a very old sketch will inspire me in a new project.” The sketch is a type of planning, which is a staple of the designer and marketer’s everyday life to this day. In this way it is able to design and track its actions to be prepared for any situation. At the time, her father disagreed that design was a serious business fit for Petya. Today he has a radically different opinion, especially since he also designs for his business. But he doesn’t stop challenging her either.

“He told me for the last time that when he saw him

railways,

I will be able to convince you completely. I’m on my way and I’m accelerating, ”says Petya with a smile.

While studying in Italy, she met her husband, Paolo Bertoni, owner of a vehicle design and urban solutions company. And he became his most valuable staff both in business and in his life. Her innate sense of discovering talents also works with the Bulgarian girl. After 5 years of living together, they were married in Monaco in January after a special permit issued by Prince Albert; You cannot marry there if you are not a citizen of the country and you do not have such permission. Although away from his homeland for years, Petya has insisted on keeping much of the Bulgarian traditions.

But if you think that, as the Bulgarian proverb says, “the shoemaker walks barefoot”, this is not the case with the cars of Petya Bertoni and her husband. She has taken care to make them as comfortable and functional as possible for your needs.

“In one of our cars at the moment, the most characteristic thing is the laser engraved leather with a specific texture and our initials, as well as a metal plate with the surname. Another race car has a full carbon coupe, and we created our livery design (the exterior of the car), dedicated to Martini Racing, as my husband raced his car years ago. It was a sign of personal sentimental respect, an element of our lyrics is to intertwine the story with innovative solutions. And from a purely feminine point of view and from experience I can tell you that many women would like to have a wardrobe in the car, but we are still looking for a solution. However, I know that if we find it, it will be a starter idea for millions, ”he laughs.

Work in a design company is dynamic and diverse. On the agenda at the moment is the construction of a new supercar, a new generation of trains, and in the meantime a complete Chinese city, “an extremely multi-layered project with countless innovative solutions, on a large scale and typically in the ambitious new style. Chinese”. The town is located near Shanghai in an area that is very similar geographically to Tuscany. There are entertainment areas, a professional auto racing track, a mini-stadium, showrooms and design studios that do everything to order, fashion and car brand sites, as well as a large residential area.

“In recent years, China has become a benchmark in copying. Realizing this, it has been observed lately

design studies,

to give an authentic style to the decisions they want to implement. They still have a lot to work for as a nation, but the important thing is that they realized that Italian know-how has a reason to be the best. The investment is private and fully dedicated to the members of the Ferrari Club in China. Under normal conditions, the implementation of the project should not have taken more than a year, but unfortunately the current situation has led to many more challenges, “said the Bulgarian.

However, Petya Bertoni is not discouraged, but sees new horizons in the current crisis and pandemic, which has especially affected the places where he works: Italy and China.

“Thanks to her, we were able to reorganize our priorities and one of the results is

the opening of the office

in Bulgaria,

with which I am very satisfied. This is my old dream and I see great potential here. This pandemic allows us to look at our lives from a different angle and respond to what is valuable to us. What do we really want from life, what trace will we leave? And to return to our roots, where we can draw great inspiration and new horizons. The Chinese market is recovering much faster than the European one, but it will still be a while before everything runs smoothly again. However, it is in such conditions that many new and unsuspected opportunities open up ”, he says and really goes back to his roots, opening a hybrid studio, meeting the needs of Bulgaria and its international projects. Also, with a Bulgarian team to train the greatest subtleties of the design world.

It would be very easy in a week to have a team of Italian designers in Bulgaria, but this is not the idea: I want to work with Bulgarian designers, import Italian know-how on local soil and not “import” employees. I believe that in this way we will be useful to local professionals and contribute to the development of the industry. For this we will carry out a series of trainings between Bulgaria and Italy. And definitely not just for car design, for over 20 years we have been making trains, subway stations and wagons, cars. In Bulgaria we rely on our specialty in urban design and public transport: these are the most pressing problems at the moment.

And there is a lot of work to be done here that I do personally.

We observe the processes in great detail and we see that there are no basic elements in the design and approach of it: for example, why does the subway not have equivalent colors for each line? Serious, structured, and experience-based changes are needed. Why are the new trains not completely customized for the Bulgarian market, with a design that reflects our culture, habits and benchmarks, inside and out? What about public transport? And the markings on the boulevards and cycle paths? Where is the unified city code? These solutions are everywhere leading to a growing wave of consumption and invariably to cleaner, orderly, and therefore more attractive cities. I’ll work on them here too, it makes sense for our country, ”says Petya Bertoni.

In addition to training Bulgarian designers and engineers, Petya has set himself other ambitious tasks. Like opening your own design academy, writing a book, and taking various exams in the new majors you’re attending. He plans to participate in a marathon in New York, as well as go through various trials to survive in the wild, to temper his mind and body. But this does not exhaust all your hobbies and interests.

“I am very curious by nature. But I only find time for things that I really like and that are functional for me. I constantly read books that I can learn more from, I go to various specialized courses. I like skiing, shooting sports, golf and meditation. It is especially attractive for my husband and me to visit new places and see the architecture of cities, especially in the medieval and renaissance style, “she says.
