The 44-year-old doctor has worked at Essen University Hospital since February. He is suspected of killing two men, aged 47 and 50, who were in the intensive care unit in very serious condition after being infected by the virus. The doctor was arrested Wednesday and confessed to murder, saying he wanted to save the patient and his family from suffering.

According to German media, the doctor informed the patients’ relatives before administering the lethal injection.

According to a court ruling last year in Germany, sick patients can ask for help to end their lives, but it is not clear if this was the situation for which the doctor was detained.
