The biggest dream of seismologists in the world is that science can predict future earthquakes. However, it is not yet possible to say exactly when and where the earth’s surface will shake. A Turkish expert still made a forecast, writes “Daily Sabah”.
Geophysicist Yovgun Ahmet Ercan said that Tekirdag County, not Istanbul, is likely the epicenter of the strong earthquake expected in the Marmara region. The destructive force of an earthquake in Tekirdag will be equivalent to magnitude 9 on the Richter scale, the expert told DHA.
“If the energy released during the expected earthquake in Istanbul is equivalent to 4.3 atomic bombs, then the expected earthquake in Tekirdag will be equal to 24 atomic bombs,” he said.
Experts agree that all forecasts and fault movements point to an imminent earthquake in the Marmara region with a magnitude of at least 7 on the Richter scale, but the epicenter or moment of the earthquake is impossible to predict. A few weeks ago, the city of Izmir was hit by a strong earthquake, which destroyed buildings and killed more than 100 people. The country has suffered devastating earthquakes in the past, including a 7.4 magnitude earthquake in 1999 that killed 17,800 people.
