“I want to show the middle finger to the Bulgarians.” This was stated by the Prime Minister of the Republic of North Macedonia, Zoran Zaev, on local TV21 in response to a provocative question.
Asked by the host of the “Click Plus” program Boryan Jovanovski if he wants to show the middle finger to Bulgarians after the veto that our country imposed on them to join the EU, Zaev said:
“It’s the easiest thing. It comes to me, how can I not think of it. I have every right in the world to do it after everything we’ve done.”
However, he immediately explained that he had learned from the mistakes of his predecessors that such language did not lead to anything good.
The dialogue between Sofia and Skopje is taking on an increasingly grotesque few days after Bulgaria vetoed the Republic of North Macedonia’s negotiating framework and blocked its path to the European Union. Macedonian rulers remain optimistic that a breakthrough is possible before the end of the year and a change in Bulgaria’s position, but the language towards Bulgaria in the local media is becoming “brighter.”
In this context, Zaev expressed his willingness to sign a new document with Bulgaria, as Bulgaria insists. However, it seems very difficult to reach an agreement in the context of dozens of red lines on both sides.

Zaev fires MIA chief for addressing Zaharieva and Bakoyani “bitches
The most recent example of hate speech against Bulgaria in the Republic of Macedonia was given by the Chairman of the Supervisory Council of the Macedonian Information Agency (MIA) Zoran Ivanov, who indulged in vulgar language towards the Bulgarian Foreign Minister , Ekaterina Zaharieva.
Ivanov wrote that “Zaharieva and Bakoyannis are bitches,” referring to former Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis, who is the sister of current Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, BGNES reported.
Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev and Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani tonight demanded the removal of Zoran Ivanov for his inadmissible act, BGNES reported.
Zoran Zaev commented on the veto imposed by Bulgaria on the Republic of North Macedonia to join the EU: “What happened is a great injustice. I think this is not the wish of the Bulgarian people and Prime Minister Borissov.”
According to him, this measure is dictated by the upcoming parliamentary elections in Bulgaria in March 2021.
However, a day ago, Prime Minister Borissov explained that the Bulgarian position is based on principles and reflects the desire of all Bulgarians.
Zaharieva: a complete disgrace
On Thursday, Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva told Nova TV that there is no place for Balkan sexism in the EU.
“What has been happening lately with hate speech in North Macedonia is a complete shame. Zaev has known for a long time where the country has violated the Neighborhood Agreement, we have an intergovernmental commission.” she said.
When asked if he expects Zaev to show the Bulgarian middle finger, Zaharieva said:
“It remains to do that. He has not shown me so far, we have a dialogue so far.”
“As a woman, I am bothered by their language and sexism. Balkan sexism has no place in the European Union”, Zaharieva said regarding Zoran Ivanov’s comments.
She added that she does not accept posts such as “Bulgarian women cost two socks.”
“They have heard such insults in Bulgaria. There may be contradictions, but this is the main reason why we cannot say ‘Yes’.”, she said.
Karakachanov: the match is over
“The match ended the other day. From now on, there is an opportunity to put it back on the European Union agenda by the end of the year, if North Macedonia is ready, but that’s theoretical,” he told BNT Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Krassimir Karakachanov. .
Karakachanov wonders what it means for Skopje to be declared persona non grata, as ideas have emerged in North Macedonia.
“They will not dare to do it, they will not, because it would be a vulgar and extremely rude diplomatic error. How this work will happen, I don’t know how it can happen. said the defense minister.
According to him, when North Macedonia has been lying for 30 years, Bulgaria cannot trust it.
