“I have never seen so much hopelessness in my life. Both doctors and patients. The situation is truly tragic.”
This is what Svetla Parker, who lost her father on Friday the 13th, Professor Kiril Karagiozov, told Dnevnik. He died of COVID-19 at St. Anna Hospital in Sofia. The last she heard from him on the phone was that he was being taken to the intensive care unit. After seven days there and with signs of improvement, he died.
“Doctors do not talk to their relatives because they have nothing to tell them. Besides today, the patient worsens tomorrow. The doctors themselves are under terrible pressure, they blame them and they themselves lose the battles for their loved ones, the battles for their colleagues”. says Svetla Parker. While his father was in the hospital and saw the condition of the doctors, his partner Ann Griffin (who have been involved in voluntary initiatives since the beginning of the covid crisis) offered to bring the doctors lunch. It turns out that he had to have permission from the CEO, who, however, was absent having to deal with the funeral of a relative. Then Svetla Parker’s father died, but she started the campaign “Hot Lunch for Bulgarian Hospital Staff”. She donated 500 BGN in memory of her father, her acquaintances and relatives also donated and in a few days they managed to collect around 1,500 BGN, which will be enough in about 30 days.
Starting Monday, they bring lunch to St. Anne’s. The food is prepared by the Caritas-Caristo Foundation social enterprise, which will accept donations by bank transfer (invoices will be published below).
“All the personnel are in their prime, doctors, nurses, paramedics, even the guards move with their faces broken and annoyed. In pathoanatomy, the pile of requests for the release of the bodies is 30 cm high. And I began to understand that if we don’t see our doctors, there will be no one to care for us in the coming months, in which we will face even greater stagnation, depression and daily tragedies from the loss of loved ones, to whom we cannot even say goodbye. ”Parker wrote in a post on your Facebook profile, inviting your friends and acquaintances to donate.
“It’s not about whether the doctors have money, they have money. But they don’t have time. Even if they drink water. This is the opportunity for us to support them. I don’t have anything else. The nurse from the infectious disease ward came for lunch today. and he told me: “Go faster, they will say that I am absent a lot.” “St. Anna “is the hospital with the most covid beds and wards, after” Pirogov “, says Parker.
For two days, she and Anne Griffin have brought ten servings of food to the emergency department, the intensive care unit and the infectious disease unit. “After Help Karma, things with donations are delicate and complicated, but I will try to regularly post responsibility for funds,” said Svetla Parker.
He adds that the goal is to encourage people to donate money to the social enterprise. “The reason is a hot lunch for the Bulgarian doctors. If it is a company that wants to donate and wants a certificate for it – transfer it to the Caritas account and from there they will transfer them to the social enterprise”, explains the volunteer.
The contagious good
“We make sure the food is nutritious. These doctors don’t just need to eat, they are on their feet for 12 hours, under nervous tension,” Parker said.
She says that at the beginning of the pandemic, Anne Griffin found where and ordered protective equipment for a hospital where she has friends in the United States. And now the friend with whom she spoke about the donation and who is a nurse there, contacted her and, seeing the “Hot Lunch” initiative, decided to donate and help. “Caristo’s cook is Lebanese, Anne is American, her friend from the United States, Lena is Russian. All this madness with race and religion takes a backseat in a situation where we are literally at war,” says Svetla. . Parker.
The account in which anyone can donate is that of the social company “Karisto” – IBAN BG18UNCR70001523188321. Restaurant donations are also accepted.
