A double infection of flu and COVID-19 hit Sofia – Diseases

For the first time in Sofia, patients infected with both COVID-19 and seasonal flu have been identified. This was announced by Prof. Radka Argirova, clinical virologist at the Acibadem City Clinic Tokuda Hospital.

“On November 11, 12 and 16, I isolated three people with combined infections in the Tokuda virology laboratory: influenza A and COVID, as well as influenza B and COVID. This was done with a multiplex PCR test, which detects simultaneously influenza A, influenza B and COVID. Apart from another person, I only isolated influenza B, so we already have the flu, “explained Professor Argirova, who was part of the former Expert Medical Council of the government.

Therefore, seasonal flu is already circulating in the country, and the form of contagion with them is the same as with the coronavirus: they are transmitted by air.

It is too early to tell how the disease progresses in cases where a person is infected with influenza and coronavirus.

Professor Argirova clarifies that the positive samples are from people who went to be tested at will. They were in generally satisfactory condition, writes Dnevnik.

Argirova also explains that it is not possible to predict whether there will be a flu wave this year. This usually happens in late January and early February. Given the measures imposed to combat the coronavirus, the number of cases this winter season may be lower.
