The Russian parliament passed a bill at first reading that guarantees lifetime immunity for the Russian head of state, TASS reported.
The Russian government confirmed the decision. The change is part of reforms that were approved in a referendum.
The law guarantees immunity to every president and his family after the expiration of his term. Vladimir Putin has already received the right to run for the fifth consecutive term.
The State Duma approved the change in the first of three readings. Another vote and the approval of the president will be held shortly.
The president is expected to face charges for crimes against the state. However, this must be approved by two thirds of the deputies.
Presidents also receive a permanent seat in parliament.
