Petar Karaangov was born on November 11, 1931 in the city of Sveti Vrach, today Sandanski, in a family of refugees from Aegean Macedonia. He graduated from high school in his hometown, from the Institute of semi-superior State Libraries and Bulgarian philology at the University of Sofia “Kliment Ohridski”. He works as a librarian at the Chitalishte library in Sandanski, as a proofreader at the “Bulgarian Writer” publishing house, as an editor for the magazine “Flame”, as editor-in-chief of the “Bulgarian Writer” publishing house and at the Boyana Feature Film Studio “. He was director of the Cyril and Methodius National Library (1983-89) and Secretary General of the Union of Bulgarian Writers (1989-91).

Karaangov has won numerous awards and distinctions, including the National Vase Prize, the National Literary Prize “The Spring of the White Paws” (Harmanli), the Annual Prize of the Bulgarian Poetry Union. Holder of the Stara Planina Order. Honorary citizen of his hometown Sandanski. His poems have been translated into more than 20 languages.
