Germans must prepare for another 4-5 months of strict restrictive measures to halt the increase in the number of people infected with coronavirus. They should not expect current measures to be relaxed quickly, Economy Minister Peter Altmeier told the weekly Bild am Sonntag, BTA reported, citing Reuters.

The worst is still over, he said, given the number of people infected. “We cannot afford to open or close the economy,” Altmeier added. Germany has introduced a package of measures to limit the second wave of the pandemic. Restaurants are closed, but schools and shops are still open, Reuters recalls.
The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus infection in Germany per day has risen by 16,947 to a total of 790,503 since the start of the epidemic in the country, according to the Robert Koch Institute.
Altmeier stressed that Germany should not rush to relax the measures. If we do not want days with 50,000 new infections, as was the case in France a few weeks ago, we have to end things, not constantly speculate on what measures can be relaxed again, he told Bild am Sontag. All countries that lifted restrictions too soon are paying a heavy price in the form of lives lost, he said.
