The leadership of UMHAT “St. George” EAD, Plovdiv calls on all media outlets to be more careful and cautious when spreading or using statements and materials from social media, which often contain direct attacks and extremely negative evaluations of the activities of hospitals and employees. on the front line with COVID-19.
The reason for our address is the publications that give media publicity to a statement made on Facebook by Ms. Iliana Zaharieva, manager of the large A1 telecommunications company, who lost her father during her treatment at St. George University Hospital. Doctors did everything they could to save Mr. Zahariev’s life, however, an investigation into the specific case is underway, which tracks the full chronology and all the details mentioned in Ms. Zaharieva’s post.
We sympathize with all those who lost loved ones in the pandemic and express our deepest condolences.
Many people in a state of affection tend to look for the reasons for their sadness or suffering in what at first glance is easier to give an explanation, without first looking for the facts and without paying attention to the consequences of their accusations. and words they would have for others. Often people do not even realize that with their judgments and damning speeches they are defending only their own ego, and that their messages can easily be used for destructive or manipulative purposes. We understand that it is important for patients and their loved ones to share their concerns and even resentment when they have felt pain or their rights or interests have been affected.
However, unreasonable reports and media posts can contribute to the discouragement of already exhausted doctors and healthcare workers. In this difficult situation, we specialists in medical institutions have to deal with patients and their families, and not oppose them.
We realize that this epidemic is testing the entire society, because as human beings we are all concerned about our parents, family and friends. Everyone must understand that we are at war! War on the virus, war on fear, war for human lives! Yes, hospitals may look like “infirmaries”, but the goal is to help as many people as possible! There is no doctor who does not want his patient to recover. There is no doctor who saves by depriving the patient of care.
It’s sad when you did your best, but the result is not good! You wonder why, what did I miss, could something more have been done, I was late, I made a mistake with the evaluation? No one can be indifferent to death! We carry this trauma, this pain together with our loved ones! One of the heaviest taxes is paid by front-line doctors and healthcare workers, who are exposed to enormous stress and extremely high health risk, and work with their superpowers. Trust, built with great effort and diligence, should not be destroyed lightly. We do not doubt the need to inform the public, but it is very important to us that the information is reliable. Because what is easily destroyed cannot always be restored!
