Bulgaria has always been friends with Macedonia. Despite the denial of the Bulgarian language, we have helped them in all difficult times. 30 years after the changes, you cannot want to be in the EU and at the same time celebrate one of the darkest dictators: Tito. The two things contradict each other. It amazes me that you now realize what we have been telling you for so many years. Nobody deprives them of the right to self-determination, but not at the cost of stealing history. When they left, they will soon deny the existence of the Bulgarian nation. We cannot bear this. This was stated to bTV by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ekaterina Zaharieva.
“We will continue to help Macedonia, but not unconditionally. It amazes me that they are only now realizing what we have been telling them all these years. I’m not even sure they are realizing it,” she added.
“Bulgaria does not say ‘no’ to their EU membership. We believe that they currently do not meet the conditions for the application. Their policy is to hate Bulgaria and there is no way to say ‘yes’,” he added.
“We do not dispute their right to self-determination, we are the first to recognize them as a state, but we cannot tolerate this happening at the expense of Bulgaria,” Zaharieva added.
“Their ideology continues to develop in a way invented by Tito or Stalin,” the minister said.
“If someone there expresses the opinion that North Macedonia should approach Bulgaria, he is declared a national traitor, Zaharieva gave an example. The negotiating framework has been debated for a month and a half, but due to the insurmountable contradictions between Skopje and Sofia. , North Macedonia EU membership is not possible at this stage, “he added.
