Kostov: Macedonia has a problem with the EU, not with us

“Macedonia has a problem with the European Union (EU), not with us. They have to solve it if they want to be accepted.” This is what former Prime Minister (1997-2001) Ivan Kostov told Darik Radio.

“They don’t understand how far they are from European values and their willingness to be members,” added.

According to him, Skopje is not implementing the neighborhood agreement and our neighbors are not fulfilling the conditions for EU accession negotiations.

“Good neighborly relations cannot be built on myths and lies about the past. You cannot deny the common history, not the common one, as they call it.”he noted, said Ivan Kostov.

Skopje is not implementing either the statement signed with Lyubcho Georgievski or the 2017 contract, based on this statement, Kostov said, adding that at the time the statement was signed, nothing further could be done regarding bilateral relations. . our relations, due to the severe indoctrination in the Republic of Macedonia, which continues to this day.

He added that no matter what agreements are signed, in Macedonia adequate efforts will not be made to implement them, and the reason for this is the severe deficits and dependencies that our neighbor has and that are inherited from the communist past of the common state of Yugoslavia. .

The former prime minister described the position of European countries on this issue as disinterested indifference. He recommended to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs a more active policy towards our partners in the EU in order to clarify the Bulgarian position.

According to Kostov, North Macedonia politicians are trying, through European countries, to pressure Sofia to change our position.

According to him, the negotiations between Macedonia and the Bulgarian government should continue, but with a different approach, negotiating a roadmap with which the neighbor will be forced to fulfill all the conditions to become a member of the EU.

Kostov also said Deputy Prime Minister Krassimir Karakachanov was gaining popularity by arguing with neighboring politicians, but “IMRO’s bragging will not work.”

“Without European aid, they (Macedonia) cannot overcome their ideological deficits. If they do not agree with their negotiating framework with us, and it does not enter into a special chapter, the Bulgarian government must clearly state: that it will postpone our support for its members until they give in “added the former prime minister, adding that clear arguments should be made based on European values and principles.

According to Kostov, the start of negotiations in December should be postponed.
