“We are in a free fall mode. General practitioners pay their tribute in the fight against coronavirus, they act in an extraordinary way, because it is like that when you are at war, and we are at war,” said Dr. Valentin Yanev, general practitioner He spoke to the Bulgarian National Radio about the situation with the coronavirus pandemic and how he and his colleagues work in the current situation.
Dr. Yanev pointed out that every patient who complains of fever develops COVID-19 and one in two to three people develops pneumonia. The doctor suggested that the picture was similar with his colleagues.
“In our offices we only screen COVID patients and if after a six-hour shift we have to go home, everyone waiting for our advice will be left without help.
I have an average of 100 conversations a day with patients, also at night. I have about 1000 patients, there are colleagues with 2000 practices, 3000 patients, their phone calls are probably more.
We give therapy, recommendations, receive additional information from patients and every day we monitor the therapy that they have prescribed. We are seeing the moment when they start to get worse, “he explained.
According to him, “a doctor who interrogates well diagnoses well”, so he does not consider it wrong to consult patients by telephone.
According to him, it is a crime that patients cannot be hospitalized and have to find connections to be able to provide them with a hospital bed.
“We managed to keep most of the patients in pre-hospital care. We work with a protocol, when we see that the person is getting worse, we refer him to a medical institution …
If this continues, we are entering the northern Italian scene and people with pneumonia will die in their homes.
The picture is bad and dramatic, “warned Dr. Yanev.
He added that if the crisis continues to unfold at this rate, pre-hospital care will collapse, doctors will get sick and offices will close. “The fight is to stop the infection, we must toughen the measures,” said the doctor.
