The Plovdiv District Court convicted the Mayor of Kaloyanovo Municipality, Georgi Georgiev, of driving under the influence of drugs.
Georgiev’s punishment is 8 months of conditional “prison” with 3 years of probation, a fine of BGN 400 and deprivation of the right to drive a motor vehicle for a period of 1 year and 6 months.
Georgiev, 39, who is the second mayor of Kaloyanovo, was convicted in a speedy trial by the Plovdiv District Prosecutor’s Office two days after the event. He has reached an agreement with the Prosecutor’s Office on the amount of his sentence.
On November 10, Georgi Georgiev, 39, was caught by the traffic police in Kaloyanovo municipality driving a drugged official car. The police were shocked that he was concerned and his hands were shaking, so they tested him for alcohol and drugs. The second test was positive for cocaine.
Georgiev’s sentence is final. According to the lawyers, he should be removed from the position of mayor. Local government law makes it clear that those convicted of general crimes cannot hold managerial positions.
