Poverty in Bulgaria is growing

In the period 2013-2019, the proportion of poor Bulgarians has increased and our country will not meet the national target: the number of people living in poverty will decrease by 260 thousand by the end of this year, compared to the base year 2008 This is clear from the National Poverty Reduction Strategy for the next decade, published for public discussion.

The document sets out the following targets: By the end of 2030, the average pension will reach BGN 677 compared to BGN 412 this year, and the minimum pension for seniority and age will be BGN 428 compared to BGN 250 this year.

Despite the decrease in the number of people living in poverty by approximately 46 thousand people in 2019 compared to the base year of 2008, the trend shows that it is not possible to achieve the desired value of the poor in Bulgaria to decrease in 260 thousand at the end. this year and in the context of the Covid-19 crisis, which is also having an impact.

However, the goal for the next 10 years in the strategy is for the proportion of the poor over 65 to melt to 10 percent and from the current one to almost 35 to 25%.

A second important goal is to reduce child poverty. Therefore, next year the payment of universal child allowances is fixed for all children, regardless of family income, as the amount of benefits increases.

According to Eurostat data, Bulgaria is among the countries where the population’s risk of poverty is above the European average.

Last year, 2.2 million Bulgarians fell into the at-risk-of-poverty category. Most of them belonged to the age group over 65 and among children under 18.

Also in 2019, the poor in our country were 22.6 percent or 1,586 million people.
