North Macedonia will play in the European Football Championship for the first time. The team led by Igor Angelovski beat Georgia 1-0 as a guest in the deciding match.
The timeless Goran Pandev became a hero. The 37-year-old Genoa striker scored in the 55th minute.
At the European Championship, which was postponed for a year due to the pandemic and will be held in the summer of 2021, the Macedonians will be in a group with the Netherlands, Ukraine and Austria.
North Macedonia became the first lower-level team in the UEFA hierarchy to take advantage of the new rules. This is the first championship in Europe, to which, in addition to the traditional classifications, teams from each of the divisions of the League of Nations arrive. North Macedonia and Georgia are part of the lowest level: Division D.
The game was played, but with few accurate shots. In the first half, the Georgians held the ball longer and had more opportunities without reaching a goal.
At the beginning of the second half, the Macedonians successfully completed a good attack. Pandev fought for the ball, overtaking the rival goalkeeper with a pass and scored. The guests kept the lead until the end and achieved the historic victory.
