An explosion of disinfectant chemicals caused a large fire that broke out yesterday at the cherry processing plant in Katunitsa. This was revealed to NOVA by the Ministry of the Interior. There is no air pollution in the town and surrounding settlements, after the disaster, according to initial data from the mobile laboratory of the eco-inspection.

The fire, which lasted for hours, burned two trucks, the finished products warehouse, the cold room and more than 1000 plastic cans for the storage of finished products.

“The damage is great. The cooling base burned down. This is almost a new cooling base, soon built with modern technology. The damage is great,” explained Iliana Avramova, head of labor protection at the factory.

The fate of 350 workers working at the factory remains unclear.

“People are worried not so much about their health as about losing their factory job. There are families that work, both husband and wife are inside, and there are families with one or two loans. It’s hard! ”, Thinks the mayor of the village of Katunitsa Krassimir Yurukov.

The families of the houses near the factory, which were evacuated yesterday, are now home. For Marta and her two children, the night was filled with anxiety.

According to investigators, the fire started while loading and unloading barrels filled with chemicals.

“During the unloading there were barrels with dry hypochlorite, which is used in the production base and as a result of this explosion a fire appeared, which spread and spread like wildfire in a warehouse”, explained Anelia Vlahkinova – senior expert in RD PBZNS – Plovdiv.

Investigators have already confiscated security footage from the factory. Meanwhile, prosecutors entered the factory to investigate the cause of the fire. There are two main versions: technical malfunction or human negligence.

From the burning of polyethylene cans, barrels, and tires, until 2 p.m. in the town’s air there were elevated levels of fine dust particles. Today everything is normal. Today, the school and kindergarten in Katunitsa remained closed.
